Juventus starlet Nicolo Fagioli is reportedly being investigated in Italy for betting on illegal platforms which could see him face a ban of up to three years if found guilty.

Fagioli, 22, broke into Juventus’ team last year after an impressive loan spell at Cremonese in 2021-22 and has quickly become a key player for head coach Max Allegri.

The midfielder has also won one cap for Italy and has featured six times in Serie A so far this season.

However, according to Italian reports, Fagioli’s progress could soon be halted with the Turin Prosecutor’s Office now looking into allegations that he has been betting on unlicensed online outlets.

The reports states the Italian Football Federation’s prosecutor Giuseppe Chine was made aware of the investigation at the end of August and handed the initial documents soon after.

Regulations state that if Fagioli is found guilty, the 22-year-old could be suspended from football for a maximum of 36 months.

The rise of unlicensed betting platforms has been a growing problem in Italy in recent times, with public prosecutor Manuela Pedrotta increasingly drawing attention to these outlets.

Italian reports go onto state how investigators analysed user access by cross-referencing data along with various transactions that were carried out, while also verifying the real names and nicknames of registered users on these illegal sites.

During this analysis Fagioli’s name came up. While a fine for those who have used the illegal sites would normally be sufficient, the fact the midfielder is a professional sportsman means the situation is different and a harsher punishment is seen as necessary.

Punishments for breaching betting regulations have been handed out in England in recent times, with Ivan Toney (pictured) banned for eight months after admitting 232 breaches

The new judicial problems for Juventus come after they were deducted 10 points last year in Serie A and banned from European football this season by UEFA for alleged financial irregularities.

The investigation – also by the Turin Prosecutor’s Office – similarly saw several former members of the club’s board handed bans from from football, including ex-club president Andrea Agnelli and then-Tottenham managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

Meanwhile, in England, Brentford striker Ivan Toney was banned from football for eight months after admitting 232 betting offences, while Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo received a suspended five-month suspension after breaching betting regulations on 375 occasions.

Fagioli was not named in Italy’s squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and England over the coming week.
