Lewis Macari made quite the statement on his EFL debut with an absolute screamer that secured the victory for League Two side Notts County.

The loanee from Stoke City – who's the grandson of Manchester United legend Lou Macari – was making his football league debut in their clash against Gillingham on Saturday (October 21). With 12 minutes of action left, the game was tied at 1-1 but a thunderous 20-yard strike from the Scotsman fired past Jake Turner as Notts County continue their glorious start to life in League Two.

It was County's 5,000th EFL game as they sit second in the league thanks to Macari's debut goal as manager Luke Williams paid tribute to the 21-year-old for his constant effort in training which certainly paid off. "He’s done himself proud," he said. "He performed brilliantly. I have to make sure I reward people for their hard work in training. He’s really enthusiastic so I wanted to be brave and give him a chance.

"This was a display of his personality. He did the job he was asked to do efficiently, but then he expressed himself as an individual. He had a big decision to make when the ball was out in front of him and he took it on. He showed us a new side to his game."

Macari has definitely lived up to the family name made famous by grandfather Lou who played 11 years with Manchester United, making over 400 appearances during his tenure at the club. It was the 50th anniversary earlier this year of the 74-year-old's debut for the Premier League giants as he opened up about moving to the club in 1973, admitting that the opportunity to play with the late Sir Bobby Charlton was one he couldn't pass up.

"I was on my way to Liverpool, because I had no idea that there was any interest from Manchester United," the former Scotland international said.

"As soon as I knew Manchester United [were interested], I'd played with the Lisbon Lions at Celtic and I was determined to play with another set of European Cup winners at United, with Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, George Best and Brian Kidd, whom I'd played against for Scotland Schoolboys."
