Sydney Roosters star recruit Dominic Young is in a serious but stable condition in hospital in the United Kingdom after a sinus infection spread to his brain last week.

Young, who recently travelled home to play for England in the Test series, has been in hospital for over a week after suffering headaches and swelling to his face that resulted in one of his eyes closing.

He is currently receiving treatment and isn’t expected to be discharged from hospital for another week.

The 22-year-old Englishman missed out on the opening Test of England’s three-game series against Tonga and is expected to play no further part in the series.

The Roosters are confident he will be fit to play in round one next season, but the infection and expected recovery time may have an impact on his pre-season training program with his new club.

Young’s manager, Michael Cincotta, confirmed the severity of Young’s situation and said his condition was exacerbated by the flight from Australia to England. Cincotta was confident his client was now on the mend.

He’ll be ready to go for the start of next season.”

The Roosters sent physiotherapist Steph Brennan, who is in England as part of the Tongan medical staff, to check up on their prized recruit in hospital. The club was awaiting details from Young’s doctors when contacted by the Herald on Monday.

Young, who was one of Newcastle’s best players on their inspired run into the finals this year, signed a four-year deal back in February to join the Roosters in 2024.

England coach Shaun Wane, talking before the weekend’s 22-18 win over Tonga, downplayed the severity of Young’s condition leading up to his side’s series opener in St Helens.

“He’s in hospital with an illness [and] will be assessed next week,” coach Shaun Wane told NRL.com when asked about Young and whether he would be available for the return encounter at John Smiths Stadium next Saturday.

Team doctor Chris Brookes said Young had had an infection drained. It’s understood the scorer of 25 tries for Newcastle this year was feeling unwell last weekend and was late into camp as a result.

Young’s younger brother, Alex, has also been signed by the Roosters and recently landed in Australia to begin his time at the club.

Sports news, results and expert commentary. Sign up for our Sport newsletter.

Source: Read Full Article

Save articles for later Add articles to your saved list and come back to them any time.
