Alejandro Garnacho may have had a part to play in Andre Onana’s dramatic last-second penalty save as Manchester United registered their first Champions League win over the campaign over Copenhagen on Tuesday evening. It looked as though Erik ten Hag’s side were heading for another disappointing European night before Harry Maguire popped up with a timely goal to break the deadlock.

United huffed and puffed for a second goal to make the final stages of the game less nervy, but failed to take their chances. And they were nearly made to pay in the final kick of the game when Scott McTominay gave away a penalty for a rash challenge in the box.

Henrik Larsson’s son stepped up for the spot kick, but saw his effort saved by Onana as Old Trafford erupted. The United shot-stopper managed to get a strong left arm to Larsson’s effort to parry the shot away with the full-time whistle blown just seconds later.

But Garnacho may have actually played a role in Copenhagen missing their chance to walk away with a point.

Cameras picked up the 19-year-old standing on the penalty spot while the referee was being surrounded by players from both teams. The attacker could then be seen purposefully scuffing up the spot in a blatant act of gamesmanship.

The win for United now means that they move about Copenhagen into third in the group and just one point behind Galatasaray. The Danish side will have their chance at revenge in two weeks though when both teams compete in the reverse fixture.
