Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has admitted it is ‘not good news’ that Gabriel Jesus limped off during their 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The Gunners face an anxious wait over the fitness of their striker after he was taken off – having scored one and assisted another – late on in their Group B victory at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Jesus’ goal proved to be the winner after he set up Gabriel Martinelli for the opener, but the Brazilian’s night ended on a sour note after he limped off holding his right hamstring after losing the ball in the centre of the pitch.

Arteta was forced to replace him with Eddie Nketiah for the closing stages and the Spaniard was not optimistic about his chances of recovering quickly.

“No, he felt something in his hamstring. So, we’ll see,” Arteta said. “Straight away he asked to be subbed which is not good news because Gabi is not a player that does that at all, so we have to wait and see in the next few days.”

Arteta had lauded the impact from Jesus after his wonderful curling strike found the top corner to make it 2-0. The £45million signing from Manchester City has struggled for goals in the Premier League with only one in seven appearances, but his third goal in as many games in Europe proved crucial after Sevilla’s second-half fightback.

“It was a magic moment in the game, we need the big players to step in and create in those moments,” Arteta said.

“In the first few minutes as well, we had big opening with Martinelli to score and we need that. We need the players to perform to their best and create something special.”
