Formula One’s ruler Mohammed Ben Sulayem claims his enemies tried to destroy him over the proposed introduction of an 11th team – even while he was mourning the death of his son.

The FIA president laid bare the infighting around the General Motors-backed Andretti team’s application to join the grid from 2026.

Ben Sulayem opened an ‘expressions of interest’ process at the beginning of the year and has since approved the American bid. But he faces ongoing hostility from F1’s owners Liberty Media, who are evaluating whether to approve Andretti’s introduction, and the existing teams.

Liberty might be forced to increase future prize money, which the teams would have to share it an extra way.

‘I went through hell,’ said Ben Sulayem, who lost his son Saif, 29, in a road accident in Dubai in March. ‘They attacked me even when my son died. They abused me to try to break me, just because I opened expressions of interest. We have a contract that allows for 12 teams, don’t forget.

‘I ask myself, ‘What did I do to get all this abuse?’ How can you refuse GM? For God’s sake, they are an OEM (original equipment manufacturer).

‘I’m optimistic that they (Liberty) won’t say no. It is good for business. It is good for motorsport. And if there is another reliable, worthy team wanting admission I’ll open a new expressions of interest process.

‘I was elected to look after the sport. I put nothing in my pocket. There are no shareholders. There is no board of directors to share profits. My mission is different from theirs.’

Ben Sulayem did not specify who was behind the alleged attacks, but he is thought to be referring, at least in part, to media briefings. The FIA last week increased the maximum fines for drivers to €1million (£870,000), a jump from €250,000 (£218,000). It is the first hike in 12 years.

‘The old regulations dated to Jurassic Park,’ said Ben Sulayem. ‘A million is not something we want to impose. To avoid it: just stick to the rules.’
