Manchester United look set to continue a trend of bringing back former players to the club after letting them leave with reports claiming David de Gea could be offered a route back just months after he was released. It was far from the fairytale end to De Gea’s Old Trafford career that he would have wanted having been at the club for 12 years.

He was replaced by Andre Onana this summer with the Cameroon international coming under scrutiny for a number of errors in his first few months at the club. But it’s now being reported De Gea could be set for a sensational return to Old Trafford in the New Year if Onana ends up going to the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon.

The Spaniard may well reject United’s reported offer – and there wouldn’t be many who would be surprised given the manner of his exit. However, it’s United that may need to look at their past ventures in bringing back former players to fill a hole that may make them think twice about bringing De Gea back.

There have been some memorable spells of players returning to their former clubs and enjoying a triumphant comeback. But United’s recent history suggests it never ends well with Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo two prime examples.

The Red Devils could only watch on as the man Sir Alex Ferguson let leave to Juventus as a teenager blossomed into one of the world’s best midfielders. United then stumped up a club-record fee to bring Pogba back to Old Trafford, but his career took a downward spiral from that point forward.

He never truly rediscovered the kind of form he showed in Serie A with Juventus before leaving as a free agent in 2022. Ronaldo’s second coming at United was even more explosive as he set the league alight in an otherwise uninspiring 2021/22 season for the club.
