Jay Rodriguez’s disallowed goal against Bournemouth came after the longest VAR check in history as it took officials five minutes to decide his fate.

The Burnley forward thought he had levelled when he got on the end of Nathan Redmond’s pass and fired home 88 minutes in.

He was initially flagged offside before VAR said he was onside, only for the final check to conclude that he was offside all along.

It meant the Clarets were denied a late equalising goal as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the Vitality Stadium.

This latest VAR storm also means Rodriguez is still searching for his first Premier League goal since April 2022.

Jay Rodriguez was devastated to see that his goal had been ruled out by VAR after five minutes

VAR initially said that the Burnley forward’s ruled out goal was onside, leading him to think he had levelled

However, checks dragged on, the the onside call was revised to offside to deny him again

The previous longest VAR check was three minutes and 45 seconds, when David McGoldrick had a goal disallowed for Sheffield United against Tottenham in November 2019.

Burnley have now lost eight of their first ten games back in the Premier League and sit 19th in the table.

Three points are critical for Bournemouth, as Andoni Iraola’s first league win in charge of the Cherries helps them out of the relegation zone.

Burnley took a first-half lead through Charlie Taylor before Antoine Semenyo got the hosts back on level terms.

Philip Billing scored a 35-yard stunner after 76 minutes to help the Cherries to victory.

This latest VAR controversy will only fuel the simmering discontent that fans feel towards the technology and the way it used applied by officials.

If a player can be ruled both onside and offside within a couple of minutes, then it begs the question as to whether on-field decisions are clear and obvious errors in the first place.
