{"id":293686,"date":"2023-10-31T23:24:54","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T23:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstoft.com\/?p=293686"},"modified":"2023-10-31T23:24:54","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T23:24:54","slug":"revealed-the-eddie-jones-insult-that-made-rugby-australia-boss-snap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstoft.com\/rugby-union\/revealed-the-eddie-jones-insult-that-made-rugby-australia-boss-snap\/","title":{"rendered":"Revealed: The Eddie Jones insult that made Rugby Australia boss snap"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Revealed: The Eddie Jones insult that made Rugby Australia boss snap: &#8216;It&#8217;s a completely unfair comment&#8217;<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jones criticised\u00a0Michael Hooper, Quade Cooper and Bernard Foley<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jones said the trio were not the right role models for the Wallabies<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Phil Waugh said the criticism of the Wallabies greats was unfair<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh has revealed that Eddie Jones&#8217; scathing criticism of three Wallabies legends was &#8216;completely unfair&#8217; after going separate ways with the coach.<\/p>\n<p>Jones&#8217;s second stint as Wallabies mentor was an unequivocal disaster, with just two wins at the World Cup resulting in Australia missing the quarter finals for the first time ever.<\/p>\n<p>Before he quit, Jones declared that Wallabies greats Michael Hooper, Quade Cooper and Bernard Foley were not the right kind of &#8216;role models&#8217; for the players in the national side &#8211; and as far as Waugh is concerned, that crossed the line.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think it&#8217;s a completely unfair comment,&#8217; the rugby boss said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Across Michael Hooper, Quade Cooper, Bernard Foley, I think there&#8217;s 280-300 Test matches between those three. They&#8217;ve all put their body on the line over a long period of time and are role models to not just their peers but young boys and girls coming through the system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/31\/21\/77244029-12695113-image-a-202_1698788744272.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Eddie Jones did many things to infuriate Aussie fans &#8211; but his comments about three Wallabies legends crossed the line as far as the CEO of Rugby Australia is concerned<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/31\/21\/77244031-12695113-image-m-204_1698788759055.jpg\" height=\"610\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Rugby boss and Wallabies great Phil Waugh (pictured) lashed out at Jones over his stance on Michael Hooper, Quade Cooper and Bernard Foley<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So I think it is an absolutely unfair comment towards those players, given what they&#8217;ve contributed to rugby.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span>Waugh concedes the Wallabies&#8217; failure to progress out of the group stages for the first time in World Cup history is unacceptable for all stakeholders in the game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The performances of the Wallabies &#8211; and that&#8217;s our shopfront window &#8211; haven&#8217;t been good enough,&#8217; he said after confirming Eddie Jones&#8217;s shambolic 10-month reign was over.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So for all supporters, we feel the pain. We feel that responsibility, we feel like we&#8217;ve let them down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I apologise and I&#8217;ve done that a number of times, just around the performance because it has been bitterly disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Now we need to move forward, with the same direction, the same vision and the same passion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We&#8217;ve got a lot of ground to make up, with building trust with our stakeholders, with the community.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>And moving forward doesn&#8217;t mean rushing into appointing Jones&#8217;s replacement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/31\/21\/77244111-12695113-image-m-206_1698788912742.jpg\" height=\"565\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Waugh pointed out that the Wallabies legends (Michael Hooper, left, and Quade Cooper pictured) have played hundreds of Tests between them and are fine role models<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/31\/22\/77244707-12695113-image-a-210_1698789701281.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Waugh says Rugby Australia won&#8217;t be rushing into appointing Jones&#8217;s replacement as the code struggles to recover from his shocking stint at the helm<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Look, it&#8217;s all very raw. I think everyone&#8217;s a candidate,&#8217; Waugh said after the likes of outgoing All Blacks coach Ian Foster, ex-Wallabies boss Michael Cheika and former Australian assistants Stephen Larkham and Dan McKellar&#8217;s names were thrown up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We&#8217;re open to getting the best coach for our system and our team in terms of high quality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We want to make sure that we get the right panel together. Once we get that panel together, then run a process. Our next Test is not till July next year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So we have time.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>While acknowledging RA remains in a challenging financial position, which is why Jones opted to jump ship, Waugh said hosting the British and Irish Lions in 2025, the men&#8217;s World Cup in 2027 and the women&#8217;s global showpiece in 2029 would leave the governing body strong again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There are a lot of good things occurring,&#8217; said the retired great.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We won the World Cup hosting rights for &#8217;27 and &#8217;29, the Wallaroos beat France, a top-three team, for the first time ever on Saturday night, the sevens teams continue to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There&#8217;s a lot of great activity in the community games. So rugby is healthy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;(But) we need to be winning between World Cups and not rely purely on World Cup success.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/31\/22\/77244797-12695113-image-a-211_1698789826470.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Waugh apologised to rugby fans about the team&#8217;s &#8216;bitterly disappointing&#8217; performance under Jones, who only won two of nine Tests while in charge of the side for the second time<\/p>\n<p>Despite the Wallabies slumping to an all-time low of No.10 in the rankings after beating only minnows Georgia and Portugal in a woeful two-from-nine Test record under Jones this year, Waugh is confident a turnaround is imminent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We saw the performance in Dunedin against the All Blacks for 65 minutes where we were in front,&#8217; he said of Australia&#8217;s 23-20 loss to New Zealand three weeks before the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The All Blacks pushed the Springboks and potentially could have won the World Cup final.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So my view on all these aspects is you&#8217;re never as far away as you feel like you might be and you&#8217;re never as far ahead as you feel like you might be when you&#8217;re winning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So in terms of having no direction, I&#8217;d strongly dispute that because I do think we&#8217;ve got a very strong direction, a very strong vision.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear if Jones will receive any pay-out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We&#8217;ve got a deed of release with Eddie and the reason why we have taken some time to get to our announcement out is because we were working through that deed of release,&#8217;
