Manchester United fans and the supporters of other clubs have been paying tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton after the legendary former footballer’s cause of death was confirmed. Charlton died earlier this month aged 86 and has been remembered fondly by the football community, especially for his heroics as part of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team.

An inquest has heard that Charlton died as a result of an accidental fall at his care home. He was staying at The Willows in Knutsford, a care home for patients living with dementia.

The hearing was told that Charlton lost his balance as he stood up from his chair on October 16. Charlton subsequently fell, striking a window sill and “possibly a radiator”.

Staff recorded a full-body check and noted no visible injuries. However, he was later taken to a hospital and then moved to Macclesfield General Hospital after staff noticed swelling on his back.

Doctors agreed that Charlton should be placed on end-of-life care. He died five days later at the age of 86.
