{"id":293772,"date":"2023-11-01T17:26:55","date_gmt":"2023-11-01T17:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstoft.com\/?p=293772"},"modified":"2023-11-01T17:26:55","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T17:26:55","slug":"wolves-fan-found-guilty-of-racially-abusing-rio-ferdinand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstoft.com\/soccer\/wolves-fan-found-guilty-of-racially-abusing-rio-ferdinand\/","title":{"rendered":"Wolves fan found guilty of racially abusing Rio Ferdinand"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Wolves fan found guilty of racially abusing Rio Ferdinand during clash with Manchester United in 2021&#8230; as the former defender tells the court he was left feeling &#8216;sick&#8217; and &#8216;distressed&#8217; after hearing what happened<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jamie Arnold hurled racist remarks and hand gestures at Rio Ferdinand<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It took place during a match involving Wolves and Manchester United in 2021\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Arnold was unanimously convicted and will be sentenced on December 8\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A football fan has been convicted of racially abusing Rio Ferdinand at a Premier League match.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Arnold hurled racist remarks and hand gestures at the former England defender, who was working as a pundit for BT Sport during the match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United\u00a0on May 23, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first match back at the Molineux since Covid restrictions were lifted to allow fans back inside football stadiums.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 33-year-old had denied a racially aggravated public order offence but was unanimously convicted on Wednesday following a two-day trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court and will be sentenced on December 8, West Midlands Police said.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by the Mirror, Ferdinand told the court: &#8216;I felt sick if I&#8217;m honest. First time I&#8217;d gone back into a stadium in a long time, it&#8217;s not what you expect. I&#8217;ve had this before when growing up, I don&#8217;t expect it in football.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/01\/16\/77279763-12698583-image-m-32_1698857120103.jpg\" height=\"503\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Football fan Jamie Arnold was convicted of racially abusing Man United legend Rio Ferdinand<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/01\/16\/77279169-12698583-image-a-3_1698856537556.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>It took place during Manchester United&#8217;s Premier League fixture with Wolves in May 2021<\/p>\n<p>Ferdinand was asked whether the racist abuse hurt him. He replied: &#8216;Yes, it throws you. I was distressed and had to go on live TV. I wasn&#8217;t expecting to have to do that.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not what I want to do, my kids had to watch that.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Pc Stuart Ward, the UK&#8217;s first dedicated hate crime officer within a football unit for West Midlands Police, said: &#8216;Abusing anyone for the colour of their skin is disgusting and can never, ever be condoned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Arnold is old enough to know such appalling behaviour is inexcusable and certainly won&#8217;t be tolerated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I know from personal experience how being a victim of racism hurts while offenders risk their own aspirations through getting a criminal record.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I would like to thank Rio for his assistance in this investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Through his support, we&#8217;ve ensured a man has this conviction to his name.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Arnold, of Stone, Staffordshire, was arrested at the scene following the offence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Crown Prosecution Service said he was caught making racist gestures on CCTV and was seen by several witnesses in the stands.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/01\/16\/77279175-12698583-image-m-6_1698856603593.jpg\" height=\"608\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ferdinand told the court that he felt &#8216;sick&#8217;
