Heavyweight contender Martin Bakole had possibly the toughest night of all fighters on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou last Saturday.

Bakole, 30, took on former WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight title contender Carlos Takam, 42, in the first televised fight on the undercard of the ‘Battle of the Baddest’ showdown in Saudi Arabia last Saturday.

While Fury had one of the most uncomfortable nights of his boxing career as he scrapped a majority points decision victory over former UFC champion Ngannou, despite being knocked down in the third round. Bakole had a nasty incident mid-fight to manage during his bout.

Bakole, who delivered a dominant display against Takam to win via TKO in the fourth round, seemed to be making light work of the former opponent of Anthony Joshua, but he admitted after the fight he was stung by a wasp in the ring before swallowing it.

Speaking to iFLTV about the terrifying incident, Bakole said: “I can't believe it, I'm surprised. Still coughing until now. It stung me in the ring.” Bakole then pointed out on his face and inside his mouth where he had been stung, before admitting: “I swallowed it”.

Bakole’s answer stunned the interviewer who asked whether he had recovered from the sting after his victory, the Congolese admitted he hadn’t gotten over the incident at that time, replying: “I was vomiting in my changing room. I think it is still here (points to throat) but I think I will be OK.”

The Scotland-based, extended his professional record to 20-1 against Takam but the dangers of fighting on the undercard that was held outside in Riyadh, before the main event took place indoors, were made acutely aware.

Bakole’s performance will almost certainly be enough to see him return on a major undercard soon. But this time we’re sure he won’t want to be fighting out in the elements and risk another wasp attack.
