Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has admitted he would be ‘driven mad’ had he played with Antony, as he questioned the Brazilian’s contribution to the club’s attack.

Antony has come under fire for a series of underwhelming performances since joining the Red Devils for £85.5m from Ajax in 2022.

The Brazil international has failed to provide a goal or assist in his nine appearances for the club this season.

Antony was given another chance to impress after being handed a start in the Carabao Cup against Newcastle.

Cole, who scored 121 goals in 275 games for Man United, claimed Antony style of play would have frustrated him as a centre forward.

‘He would drive me absolutely mad,’ Cole told Sky Sports.

‘He is an individual, we all know he is really left footed and will not go to the right hand side. So if you are a centre forward making a run to the near post, you know you will never get it.

‘I look at things like that, he doesn’t score enough goals for me or create enough chances for his team-mates.

‘You look at him and think what are you giving.

‘They spent a hell of a lot of money on him and the manager has backed him. He has found it really tough.’

A focus has been placed on Man United’s lack of goals this season, with the Red Devils netting just 11 in their 10 Premier League matches.

Cole claimed the lack of chances created by the team will have frustrated summer signing Rasmus Hojlund.

He suggested the Danish striker will soon demand a different style from Antony the more he plays with the Brazilian.

‘I would have looked at Man United and thought am I going to win things,’ Cole said.

‘When you are playing for a team that doesn’t create a lot of chances as a forward, you would scratch your head thinking when is the next chance going to come from.

‘Within time if Hojlund keeps playing with Antony he’ll let him know “is there any chance, I’m making good runs.’
