It was Ange Postecoglou’s confidence that helped win over James Maddison during preliminary talks in the summer. Maddison had multiple top European clubs chasing his signature ahead of the 2023/2024 campaign after Leicester City were relegated from the Premier League but the 26-year-old opted to move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to work with Postecoglou.

Maddison has hit the ground since making the switch, quickly becoming one of Tottenham’s most important players. The former Foxes midfielder has scored three goals and laid on five assists in his first 10 top-flight appearances for his new club.

Postecoglou has completely transformed Spurs since coming through the door in the summer with the north Londoners currently sitting on top of the Premier League table after matchday 10. Under the 58-year-old, Tottenham have been terrorising opposition defences with his own brand of charismatic attacking football.

Meanwhile, it was Postecoglou’s own charisma that won over Maddison. “We obviously spoke about how I would fit into the way he plays and my style of play and what position and all that sort of detailed stuff,” said Maddison during a recent appearance on A League of Their Own.

“But he said at the end of it: ‘Well, really good to talk. But James, whether you decide to come or not, you’re going to see a completely different Tottenham team’.

“I just loved the confidence that he said that with – you can come and be a part of it or you can go somewhere else and it’s still going to change at Tottenham anyway. And that kind of just left that bit in my mind where I thought, yeah, I want to go and work for this guy.”
