Football fans think the Ferenc Puskas goal of the year award already has its victor.

Every year, a player is given the award which recognises the scorer of the most spectacular goal of that campaign. It is always a richly contested honour that is quite often won by more unknown players who reside in some of the more niche divisions in world football.

However, fans believe the goal that will take the award has already been scored in Serie A. It is a breathtaking strike scored by Inter Milan ace Federico Dimarco against Frosinone.

There appeared to be little danger when the Inter wing-back received a pass on the left hand side of the pitch, nearly 60 yards away from goal. He initially looked set on driving the ball towards Frosinone full-back Pol Lirola.

Instead, Dimarco managed to spot goalkeeper Stefano Turati was some way off his line. Without hesitating, the Italian international lashed his left foot through the ball and sent a floating effort over the sprawling Turati and into the back of the net.

The San Siro erupted to congratulate Dimarco, who instantly charged towards the rapturous Inter supporters to bask in their adulation. If he wants to read anymore compliments, all he needs to do is have a little surf on social media to see the comments from the football world.

"What a goal. Dimarco is so underrated. Man of the match in the UCL final in my opinion. Just overlooked because his team lost. Great strike," said one supporter, who also reminded fans of the Italian's display against Manchester City. A second wrote: "This Dimarco goal is possibly the greatest lob of all time He’s just over halfway line, way out on left touchline, he’s on the move & GK is not far off his line."

With one more simply saying: "Puskas award confirmed."

However, as is often the case when it comes to goals of this nature, there are cynical supporters who think he did not mean it. "He was defo trying to whip the ball in behind the defender," one negative fan said.

A more strident viewer also wrote: "Guarantee you he didn’t mean that! Looks at attacker on the right and accidentally laces rather than whips the ball in behind."
