An Opta supercomputer has revealed Arsenal’s chances of winning the title for the first time since 2004 have taken a significant hit over the past month.

The Gunners went into the October international break level on points with leaders Tottenham after beating Manchester City 1-0 at the Emirates thanks to a deflected Gabriel Martinelli strike.

But the side were held to a 2-2 draw by Chelsea in their first game back, and then lost to Newcastle in a controversial clash dominated by VAR decisions two weeks later.

After these setbacks, they now find themselves third behind City and Liverpool, and the supercomputer believes their chances of winning the league have dropped from 11.8 per cent to 5.7 per cent.

City were already the hot favourites to retain their crown in October, and their percentage has gone up in the weeks since, despite Pep Guardiola’s men only picking up a point in a 4-4 thriller with Chelsea in their latest fixture.

Arsenal have seen their title hopes halved over the past month, according to a supercomputer

This follows the Gunners losing in controversial fashion to Newcastle earlier this month

Having been given a 73.4 per cent chance of claiming the title in October, that figure is now up at 84.3 per cent.

Their closest challengers are expected to be Liverpool, but the Reds’ title chances have fallen to 9.3 per cent from 12.2 per cent, with concerns emerging about their away form after only drawing with newly-promoted Luton and then losing to Toulouse in the Europa League.

Spurs made a flying start to the season under Ange Postecoglou, but lost back-to-back matches against Chelsea and Wolves prior to the international break, and with James Maddison and Micky van de Ven ruled out until 2024 they have been given just a 0.3 per cent chance of winning their first top flight title since 1961.

Aston Villa are the only other side who have been given a glimmer of hope in the title race, but they are not expected to compete for the biggest domestic prize, with their percentage currently at 0.2 per cent.

The battle for a top-four finish could be far more closely fought, though.

Ange Postecoglou has seen his Tottenham side lose their last two matches, and they now have very little chance of winning the league, according to the supercomputer

Man United’s top-four chances have almost doubled since October, though

Erik ten Hag’s men have won three of their last four league games to climb to sixth place

Back in October, Manchester United had just a 3.4 per cent chance of getting into the top four, and they have since lost the Manchester derby and been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle.

However, they have won three of their last four league games under Erik ten Hag, suggesting that they may be starting to turn the tide, and the supercomputer has recognised this by boosting their chances of getting into the top four to 6.6 per cent.

This number still pales in comparison to Newcastle, despite the Red Devils currently being a point ahead of Eddie Howe’s side in the table.

The Magpies are currently dealing with an injury crisis and lost to Bournemouth earlier this month, but the supercomputer has still given them a generous top-four chance of 26.1 per cent.

Chelsea look to be improving under Mauricio Pochettino, but are still expected to miss out on the top four

The latest supercomputer does not make for particularly pleasant reading for Chelsea fans.

Mauricio Pochettino has watched his side earn draws against Arsenal and City, but they remain in mid-table, and only have a 1.8 per cent shot at making the top four.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, Everton now find themselves in the relegation zone after being deducted 10 points last week for breaching financial rules.

Yet they are only two points from safety, and the supercomputer has given the Toffees a 66.3 per cent chance of staying up.
