Former McLaren driver Mark Blundell raced directly against Michael Schumacher and he has opened up on Formula One\u2019s \u201cbig loss\u201d by not having him around anymore. The seven-time world champion has been out of the public eye since his life-changing skiing accident in 2013, with his health kept private by his family.<\/p>\n
There have been rare updates on the 54-year-old but Blundell, who began racing in F1 during the early 1990s with Schumacher, shared his hope that the ex-Ferrari and Mercedes driver is able to understand the sport and his current situation.<\/p>\n
“At the end of the day, what happened to him was incredibly difficult to take,\u201d he told OLBG. “I don’t know where we are today with Michael’s health as he’s rightly guarded. He’s still around, and hopefully he understands what’s going on. That would be a plus. It’s very difficult.”<\/p>\n
Many have suggested that Schumacher would have been the perfect F1 pundit after retiring for a second time in 2012. Johnny Herbert previously suggested that media work would have suited Schumacher and Blundell agreed with the Brit, as his personality and experience would be perfect for TV.<\/p>\n

It’s such a shame we missed out on his insight. We also missed [out] on how he could have supported his son and other up-and-coming drivers. That’s a huge loss.”<\/p>\n Schumacher has been considered one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, with no racer having won more world championships than him – Lewis Hamilton is tied with seven. Blundell shared a rare insight into Schumacher the driver and explained what exactly made him one of the greats.<\/p>\n\n
