Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has appeared to U-turn on his view of Alejandro Garnacho’s display against Everton. The midfielder gave a prickly interview to Sky Sports after the game in which he bluntly suggested that Garnacho’s wonder-strike was the only element of his performance that deserved praise.

Fernandes instead felt that full debutant Kobbie Mainoo deserved to be credited with being the best player after the 3-0 victory at Goodison Park. Garnacho’s early bicycle kick put the Red Devils on their way to a comfortable triumph on Merseyside.

But Garnacho’s stunning effort was not enough to win over Fernandes. In a spiky interview, the 29-year-old playmaker said he would only praise the winger for his goal – an incredible acrobatic effort from an angle.

“I’ll give him a good note just for the goal. But that’s because he knows I have big expectations for him,” Fernandes said.

We expect a lot from him. He knows that, even more from me. I’ll always be behind him asking for more. Amazing goal though.”

However, the Portugal midfielder now appears to have gone back on that verdict. Speaking ahead of United’s crunch visit to Galatasaray, Fernandes pointed out that there were other elements of Garnacho’s performance that deserved praise.

Asked if he has seen Garnacho practice the acrobatic effort that saw him score against the Toffees, Fernandes responded: “I don’t know if he has been training that, it’s not going to be good for his back.

“He has that special talent for big moments. But I’m more happy for his work off the ball, against Everton the best game he has done until now.”
