as Orlando Pirates pay tribute to their &#8216;formidable&#8217; former captain<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The ex-South Africa star was on his way to a funeral when the incident happened<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He was alongside his mother and uncle, who both also tragically passed away<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Papi Khomane chalked up 151 appearances for South Africa side Orlando Pirates<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Former South Africa footballer Papi Khomane tragically died in a car crash alongside his mother and uncle on Saturday, his old club Orlando Pirates have revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Khomane, who racked up nine international caps for Bafana Bafana and 151 domestic appearances for Orlando Pirates, was on his way to a funeral in Newcastle, South Africa when he, his mother Rita and uncle were involved in a tragic car accident.<\/p>\n<p>Revealing the sad news, his former club said: &#8216;Orlando Pirates are saddened to learn of the passing away of former captain Papi Khomane.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;His transformation from a quiet individual into a formidable leader during games was nothing short of inspirational.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;During his nine years with us Papi made over 150 appearances, each time exemplifying what it meant to be a Buccaneer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/28\/16\/78332403-12800797-image-m-85_1701189255732.jpg\" height=\"551\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ex-South Africa star Papi Khomane has died in a car crash alongside his mother and uncle<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We cannot speak of Papi and Yster Khomane without honouring the remarkable woman behind their successes &#8211; Mrs Rita Khomane.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Rita was the cornerstone of support for both her husband and her son.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Alongside his achievements with Orlando Pirates, Khomane also helped South Africa to a third-place finish at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations.<\/p>\n<p>He shared the squad with a host of throwback Premier League stars including Manchester United&#8217;s Quinton Fortune, Bolton&#8217;s Mark Fish and Leeds&#8217;
