Keane was in charge of the Black Cats from August 2006 to December 2008, when he was able to gain promotion to the Premier League. But alongside some success, his tenure involved a strict disciplinary policy which resulted in the occasional bust-up.

Football League journeyman Greg Halford, who played under Keane as a defender for one season, was no stranger to disagreements with the Irishman himself. But it was another player – Keane’s former Ireland team-mate Graham Kavanagh – who had the meatiest exchange with the Sunderland boss.

Kavanagh signed a three-year deal with Keane’s Sunderland in August 2006, becoming one of his first signings. He played 14 games before being ruled out of the majority of the season with injuries.

Meanwhile, Halford, now 38, recently revealed how he got off on the wrong foot with Keane in their very first meeting after signing in 2007.
