Liverpool fans want Joel Matip to be handed a new contract after suffering a season-ending Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture.<\/p>\n

The defender was forced off in the 69th minute of Liverpool\u2019s 4-3 win over Fulham at Anfield last week. Matip appeared to have twisted his knee, which scans later confirmed resulted in a serious injury which will require surgery.<\/p>\n

Confirming the blow, Jurgen Klopp explained: \u201cIt\u2019s an ACL, ruptured. That\u2019s what I unfortunately expected from the first second, everything looked like that. Very unfortunate, that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That means the 32-year-old is likely to be out for the rest of the season. And he could very well have played his 201st and last game for the Reds after eight seasons, with his contract set to expire in the summer.<\/p>\n

It acts as a double blow to the former Cameroon international, whose future with the club is now even more doubtful. But a section of the Liverpool fanbase on social media believe he should be offered an additional year\u2019s contract to support him while he recuperates.<\/p>\n

One X user wrote: \u201cWouldn\u2019t be at all shocked if The Reds looked after Joel Matip by giving him another year on his deal after this injury news,\u201d while another tweeted: \u201cI\u2019d be in favour of this. Love the man. He don\u2019t deserve to go out like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

A third added: \u201cLook what he\u2019s done for our club it\u2019s the least we can do,\u201d but others were less convinced, arguing that Liverpool is a "football club and not a charity".<\/p>\n

One fan pointed out: \u201cAs much as I love Matip they should shake his hand and see him off. Decent servant but he\u2019ll not be the same again,\u201d while another commented: \u201cUnless it\u2019s at a drastically reduced wage, I hope the club don\u2019t even entertain the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matip has been with Liverpool since Klopp\u2019s second season in charge, having joined on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016. He has helped the Reds in their greatest era of the 21st century, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Champions League while constantly blighted by injuries.<\/p>\n
