Dominic Solanke broke Manchester United hearts in clinical fashion with a flicked finish at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag's side came into Saturday's clash against Bournemouth with new vigour after defeating Chelsea at home in midweek. But the Red Devils proved to be their own worst enemies as a tragic attempt at playing out from the back ended in tears.

And it was captain Bruno Fernandes whose hopeful pass into Scott McTominay on the edge of the area was pilfered by the opposition. Lewis Cook seized his chance before feeding Solanke in the box, and the former Liverpool striker swept home the slickest of backheels.

It left the Theatre of Dreams all but silent as the away end whirred into action, the hosts left dumbstruck by the early breakthrough. And some United fans couldn't help but suggest their club was "finished" based on the quality of play witnessed in the build-up.

"How bad can Manchester United [get]," wrote a second incredulous supporter in response. "Solanke is Cook-ing United," added a third, in reference to the pair that combined to put Bournemouth ahead.

“The United team is BACK," joked another spectator, clearly not surprised with the team's swift return to struggle. The club haven't won more than three games in a row so far this season, winning back-to-back league games on just two occasions.

Ten Hag's side came into the fixture sat sixth in the table and with their eyes fixed on the Champions League places after beating the Blues. However, defeat to the Cherries would represent an all-too familiar step back in their progression.

As for Solanke, the 26-year-old has now netted four goals in his past five appearances, though this was his first outside the Vitality Stadium since September 2. The Cherries travelled on Saturday having never defeated United at Old Trafford, losing by a margin of three goals in each of their last three visits.

Andoni Iraola's in-form frontman gave the guests at least a chance of improving that record thanks to his quick thinking and initiative, however. And that's something Ten Hag may wish his United players possessed a little more of based on this season's inconsistencies.
