Todd Boehly faces an important few weeks as Chelsea owner after spending more than half a billion pounds as part of his other portfolio commitments. Boehly completed a takeover of Chelsea in the summer of 2022 for £4.25billion. Since then, the American has spent just shy of £1bn on transfers as part of a major rebuild of the club’s squad.

The 50-year-old is also the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball. It was confirmed over the weekend that an agreement had been reached for the Dodgers to acquire Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani had been the subject of intense speculation in MLB after rumours began swirling during the season that he could join a new team. The 29-year-old had spent six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels before making the switch to Dodger Stadium.

The deal agreed by the Dodgers, and sanctioned by Boehly, will see Ohtani contracted to the franchise for the next 10 years and earn $700 million (£550 million). That will be the record amount earned by an MLB player since the Angels agreed to a 12-year $430 million (£342 million) with Mike Trout back in 2019.

With Boehly owning both Chelsea and the Dodgers, he faces a busy few weeks ahead on the spending front. The January transfer window is looming, and based on comments from manager Mauricio Pochettino it looks likely to see more money spent.

Chelsea lost 2-0 to Everton on Sunday to follow on from the midweek loss to Manchester United. The Stamford Bridge club now lies in 12th place in the Premier League table and 14 points adrift of the top four places.

After the defeat at Goodison Park, Pochettino admitted that further spending may be needed to improve the club’s chances of success this season. Chelsea have lost seven of their 16 Premier League games this term, in what is Pochettino’s first year in charge of the club.
