Eddie Howe refused to blame the late penalty controversy against Paris Saint-Germain as a crucial factor in Newcastle United’s Champions League exit on Wednesday. Newcastle crashed out of Europe through a late 2-1 defeat against AC Milan as PSG joined Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.<\/p>\n
The Magpies entered the game knowing they needed a win to have any chance of progression into the knockout stages.<\/p>\n
And Joelinton lifted the roof off St James’ Park with a stunning 33rd-minute strike past Mike Maignan.<\/p>\n
Borussia Dortmund then took the lead against PSG in Germany, leaving Newcastle comfortably in second in Group F.<\/p>\n
However, PSG equalised moments later, and on the hour-mark, Christian Pulisic equalised for Milan on Tyneside, dropping Newcastle back down to third.<\/p>\n
Howe’s side hunted for a winner, but Samuel Chukwueze spiked a dagger through Geordie hearts with a late go-ahead goal shortly after entering the pitch.<\/p>\n
It left Newcastle bottom of Group F, meaning even the consolation of Europa League football evaded them in the dying embers of the campaign.<\/p>\n
