Manchester United icon Gary Neville has insisted that he would not sack Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag until at least the end of the season, though he is fearing a heavy defeat at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday. United travel to Anfield off the back of their Champions League humiliation, finishing bottom of their group as pressure continues to mount on Ten Hag.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s imminent arrival as a minority owner has added further fuel to the fire, with United significantly underperforming this season. Neville believes that it would be the “right thing to do” if Ten Hag does see out the remainder of the campaign, but wants big tactical changes in games against the traditional top six.

United’s disappointing record away to their rivals has not gone unnoticed, especially away from home, and Neville feels that Ten Hag needs to adopt a counter-attacking approach similar to his predecessors.

“I think the manager should get to the end of the season, definitely,” Neville told Sky Sports. “It’s the right thing to do, but my concern is that he doesn’t do anything different for the big games away from home. He’s continued to play the same kind of football and today, if he sends them out in the same style with man-to-man marking, open midfield, they’ll get absolutely killed.

(Jose) Mourinho did that here, (Louis) Van Gaal as well. Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) did it in big games and Ten Hag hasn’t demonstrated that he’s willing to change for big games.”

Neville insisted that United are “easy to play against” at the moment and with his former club in the middle of an injury crisis for the trip to Liverpool, he is not optimistic of their chances keeping Mohamed Salah and co at bay.
