Tony Bellew explains why Daniel Dubois low blow on Oleksandr Usyk was illegal

Tony Bellew has given his reaction to the controversial shot from Daniel Dubois that saw Oleksandr Usyk drop to the canvas in the fifth round of their heavyweight world title bout.

The British fighter dropped Usyk with a body shot that forced Usyk off balance and onto the deck. But the decision was immediately ruled a low blow by the referee and Usyk was given a time out as he sat slumped against the ropes.

The Ukrainian took four minutes to recover but went on to knock Dubois down in the eighth round before knocking him down again in the ninth to win in front of a majority home crowd.

After the fight, Dubois claimed he had been ‘cheated’ out of a victory, but former WBC cruiserweight champion Bellew gave his say on the incident on Twitter.

Alongside an image of Usyk, where his belly button could be seen above his shorts, Bellew tweeted: “Anything below the naval is classed as low in boxing! That’s not my opinion that’s a FACT! That’s the rules!

“Your shorts shouldn’t cover your naval cos if they do the belt can be hit! This picture says a thousand words! Spew it once and you’ll spew it again is also another fact!”

KSI takes on Tommy Fury at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday, October 14th as he hopes to cause an upset. Logan Paul will also be fighting at the event in front of what is expected to be a sell-out crowd.

From £40 to £2,000

Dubois and promoter Frank Warren were both left enraged by the decision, with Dubois telling fans he believed he was robbed of a famous victory.

"I don't think that was a low blow," he said during an emotional post-fight interview. "I think that landed and I've been cheated out of victory tonight. What else can I say?"

Warren was that incensed he swore on live TV, ranting: "He's been cheated, it hit him on the waistband.

“That's all he worked on in camp, to the body, we saw it as a weakness and the referee got it badly wrong. I like Usyk but that was a hometown decision. He won the fight because he was not fit to go on and they gave him a couple of minutes to recover from a legitimate shot."
