Chelsea told to make January U-turn as Pochettino warned of possible sack date

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has called on Todd Boehly to change his mind on Conor Gallagher, while also warning Mauricio Pochettino about his own future. The midfielder is linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge but Gallas insists it would be a “complete mess” if he left.

Gallagher has started 16 of Chelsea’s 17 Premier League matches this season, often captaining in Reece James’ absence. Only suspension has prevented him from featuring in every game.

It has been some turnaround for the England international, who was linked with an exit up until deadline day in the summer. But despite being a regular under Pochettino, Chelsea are still thought to be willing to listen to offers for their former academy graduate to help stay within Financial Fair Play limitations.

Gallas is bemused at the rumours and says Boehly must do all he can to keep him. He told Lord Ping: “Chelsea want to sell Conor Gallagher? To where?

“We are talking about Gallagher, who is the current captain of Chelsea, what is going on at this club? I don’t know what is going on with them.

“He’s the captain and OK they may have a £50million offer, but if you want to build a strong team, you need to keep these players and I get it some people do not like Gallagher’s style, but he’s your captain! I don’t know what’s going on. If they do this, it will look like a huge mess.”

Chelsea currently sit 10th in the Premier League, two places above where they finished last season. Gallas reckons anything lower than 12th at the end of the campaign would see Pochettino lose his job.

The Frenchman says Europa League qualification is still a possibility and says that should be the bare minimum for Chelsea. He added: “Pochettino getting the sack? I don’t think he will be sacked but it all depends on where they finish this season.

“If it’s worse than last year I think maybe he will be. I think they will qualify for the Europa League – and they have to – otherwise it will be a massive failure.

“I think the owner will give him one more year to see if he can change a lot of things, including the results as right now we know they won’t be champions. Sixth or seventh is the reality and qualifying for the Europa League.”
