Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic came close to joining arch rivals Liverpool just days before he was unveiled at Old Trafford.

The Serbian centre-back was part of a defensive tandem alongside Rio Ferdinand which helped Sir Alex Ferguson's side win nearly everything there was to win in club football, with Vidic having joined Man United back in 2006 from Spartak Moscow.

However, things could have turned out very differently for Vidic, who departed Old Trafford in 2014 when his contract expired. Prior to joining United, the Serb was approached by Rafa Benitez and Liverpool, who wanted Vidic to join them.

Speaking to the Mail back in 2018, Vidic said: "Yes, Liverpool came to me first. We spoke in the car.

"My wife did the translating. I didn’t say no to them. It was always 'going to happen, going to happen'. I don’t know what the problem was but it didn’t happen.

"But then United came and after two days, everything was done. Liverpool said they wanted to do the deal but everything was arranged with United."

In moving to United, Vidic enjoyed a trophy laden spell at Old Trafford, which saw him win five Premier League titles, three League Cups and a Champions League, too. However, whenever he came up against Liverpool, he didn't seem to enjoy himself all that much.

In fact, he was sent off four times against the Reds – famously being left sprawling on the turf by Fernando Torres at Old Trafford. "I remember all of my matches against Liverpool," he added. "To be fair, I remember more my failures than when things went better.

"And I do remember the tough Liverpool games. Maybe by remembering that stuff, it pushes me to make sure it never happens again. I don’t know… "
