Losing on the pitch, taking leave of their senses off it. If anything could quite capture the turmoil, panic and sheer irrationality at Manchester United, it was their decision yesterday to ban a number of journalists. Naturally, they missed their target and the point.
If this latest debacle serves as proof of anything it is that this is a once great club fumbling in the fog.
But we knew that already, just as we know there is disillusionment among the playing staff. We know because we hear it from sources at the club and beyond and have done for some time.

Did Sir Alex Ferguson also ban reporters from his press conferences?
Manchester United banned several high-profile journalists from attending Erik ten Hag’s press conference on Tuesday and it’s something that Sir Alex Ferguson once tried to do before.
Sky Sports chief reporter Kaveh Solekhol, the Manchester Evening News’ chief United correspondent Samuel Luckhurst, The Mirror’s David McDonnell and Rob Dawson of ESPN have all been refused entry to the media briefing at their Carrington training base ahead of Wednesday’s game against Chelsea.
The order came from Andrew Ward, United’s communications director, over what the club claimed was the reporters’ failure to contact them for comment before publication of stories.

On Tuesday, Manchester United took the draconian step of banning media outlets from Erik ten Hag’s press conference.
The struggling club took drastic action against Sky Sports, the Mirror, ESPN and the Manchester Evening News over reports that United players are beginning to turn on manager Ten Hag.
Piers Morgan led the outcry, saying: ‘WTF? I hope every other journalist now boycotts this press conference in solidarity with their colleagues. And yes, I’d say exactly the same if Arsenal behaved like this.
