Man Utd loanee Mason Greenwood steals show vs Sevilla to extend goals run

“It looks a shambles” | Man Utd are out of the Champions League

Mason Greenwood caught the eye again on Saturday by helping Getafe earn a memorable 3-0 win against Sevilla in La Liga. The Manchester United loanee’s latest goal contributions will have helped ramp up the interest in his signature ahead of his expected permanent Old Trafford exit next summer.

Getafe cruised past Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, rounding off a desperately disappointing week for the hosts after their European exit in the Champions League.

Sevilla finished rock bottom of Group B after losing 2-1 at RC Lens, meaning a second chance in the Europa League – a competition they have dominated – evaded them.

Borja Mayoral opened the scoring from the penalty spot after just five minutes before Greenwood provided the assist for Jaime Mata before half-time, making it 2-0.

Greenwood added a third from the penalty spot with 10 minutes left, sealing a win that pushed Getafe four points behind the European places in eighth.

The 22-year-old has registered four goals and three assists in his last seven appearances for the Madrid-based outfit.

He has produced nine goal contributions in 14 games since joining Getafe on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day after United’s reported plans to reintegrate him in the summer collapsed under mass backlash.

Greenwood has reportedly attracted heavyweight interest during his exploits in Spain, with United said to be set on their decision to facilitate a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

Getafe are claimed to be joined by Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid in showing interest in keeping the former Red Devils No 10 in La Liga beyond the current campaign.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also reportedly among his suitors as he continues to get back up to speed with regular football.

While Greenwood rediscovers his scoring touch overseas, Erik ten Hag has encountered serious problems with his attacking regiment this term.

Scott McTominay is United’s top goalscorer this season with six goals in 18 appearances, followed by another midfielder, Bruno Fernandes on five and Casemiro on four.

Rasmus Hojlund joins Fernandes on five, but the £72million summer arrival is yet to score in the Premier League.

Alejandro Garnacho has three goals to his name, while Marcus Rashford has only netted one open-play strike and two overall after a career-best tally of 30 last season.

Anthony Martial has also scored twice, and Antony is without a goal in his last 26 appearances for United. A new forward will undoubtedly be on Ten Hag’s radar next year.
