Rapinoe ‘plays her own entrance music’ as USWNT star ‘tries to be WWE legend’

Megan Rapinoe has been mocked for 'playing her own entrance music' ahead of her farewell appearance for the US women’s team.

The 38-year-old brought the curtain down on her legendary career with a friendly match against South Africa in Chicago at the weekend. Known for her activism off the pitch as much as her accomplishments on it, the World Cup winner rounded off her playing career in typically brash fashion.

Ahead of the South Africa game, she was captured heading into the US dressing room wearing bright reflective sunglasses and clutching a speaker playing music. The scene has led to criticism from some, including US sports columnist and podcaster Jason Whitlock.

“We’ve normalized self-idolatry,” he said. “This is swag! She’s carrying her own entrance music. It’s clownish behaviour.”

Meanwhile, some fans labelled her arrival “cringe”, with one saying: “Megan Rapinoe playing her own entrance music. Cringe.” For some fans, Rapinoe’s entrance brought back memories of wrestling icon Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart, who wore similar shades during his in-ring career.

After the US won the game 2-0, there were emotional scenes as Rapinoe said goodbye to fans. She said: "So overwhelming. It has been amazing. It has been really wonderful, to hear all the nice things, to have a closure moment, to play in front of a big crowd again.

"I'll miss it forever. I don't think I'll ever be at a moment where it will feel perfect but this is pretty close."
