Andrew Flintoff is set to be part of England’s coaching team for the five-Test tour to India at the beginning of 2024.

The 45-year-old was part of the backroom staff for England’s first one-day international against New Zealand in Cardiff, and now could repeat that same role on the tour next year.

England’s white-ball coach Matthew Mott was impressed with Flintoff during his unpaid consultancy role during the two recent series against New Zealand and Ireland, and confirmed that he could be part of the coaching set-up once again in the future.

According to The Times, England are now looking into a full time paid role for the former all-rounder, with Ben Stokes championing the move as he is a big fan of Flintoff.

Asked on Tuesday if Flintoff would be part series against West Indies in December, Mott said: ‘Not sure. He’s definitely going to join us again in future though; we’ve loved having him around.’

Matthew Mott is keen to recruit Flintoff after the players enjoyed working with him this month

‘He’s revered, he’s got an aura about him. He’s very special and what he’s gone through recently, the humility he’s displayed and the life experiences he can share have been immense. Even the seasoned Test veterans, they grew up idolising him, and to see him in the flesh offering so much has been very special.’

Flintoff will not be in India for the World Cup, which begins next week, but could be part of the red-ball tour next year.

The first test against India commences January 25 in Hyderabad and reaches it’s culmination on March 11 at Dharamshala.

The appearance as part of England’s coaching team earlier this month was Flintoff’s first public appearance following the horrific crash he was involved in whilst filming for BBC’s Top Gear last December.

The incident almost killed the cricketer-turned-TV presenter, when his opened-top car flipped over, and has left him with severed facial scars and saw him quit the TV show.
