Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy announce lengthy TGL delay due to dramatic venue collapse
There’s never a dull round of golf when Jordan Spieth is playing, as the American’s stand-in caddie quickly discovered in the Bahamas on Thursday. Three-time major champion Spieth is at the Albany Golf Club for the PGA’s Hero World Challenge, where Tiger Woods is making his long-anticipated return to action.
With regular bagman Michael Greller unable to make the event Spieth’s friend Eric Leyendecker has stepped up to the job. But in a somewhat naive fashion, the new caddie agreed to a bet with the Ryder Cup star that had disaster written all over it from the word go.
According to Golf.com reporter Dylan Dethier, to keep his man motivated, Leyendecker agreed to down a beer for every birdie that Spieth made in the first round during the Dallas Cowboys’ NFL match on Thursday evening. And as an extra incentive, he would neck three bottles for any eagle.
It’s not clear how closely Leyendecker has watched Spieth play over the years, but he will surely be regretting that proposal now. The American finished his round in third place at four under par, but that is only half of the story.
Spieth sank six birdies and two eagles during his first round and would have been the runaway leader of the event had he not also slipped up with four bogeys and a double bogey during a hugely eventful round.
But with no penalty seemingly in place for finishing a hole over par, Leyendecker was technically obliged to drink 12 beers during the Cowboys’ match against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday evening.
That contest turned out to be just as entertaining with the Cowboys edging a high-scoring game 41-35.
Dethier posted Spieth’s bizarre scorecard on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote: “Hilarious backstory to Spieth’s scorecard: His buddy Eric is caddying this week. On the first hole Thursday he promised Spieth that for every birdie they made he’d drink 1 beer while they watched tonight’s Cowboys game. Make an eagle? 3 beers.”

Spieth had even picked a local beer for his caddie to drink called Kalik. Whether Leyendecker actually took on the challenge will be evident in how steady he is on his feet during the second round but with Spieth well in contention to win the tournament, he will certainly want to retain a level-headed caddie for the next three rounds.
Open Champion Brian Harman topped the leaderboard after the first round at five under par alongside fellow American Tony Finau, with Spieth one shot further back.
Meanwhile Woods could only finish three over par on his first competitive round since The Masters back in April after he bogeyed all of the final four holes.
