LIV Golf has sensationally announced a date for an event in Las Vegas that will clash with the Super Bowl and a Floyd Mayweather bout in February 2024. It is set to be a blockbuster few days for sports fans in Sin City, with the NFL season finale going ahead on the same weekend as Mayweather’s showdown and the new LIV Golf event.
On Wednesday, LIV Golf – backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – shared information on most of its regular season events. While some key details for specific tournaments were omitted, a batch of new courses and events have been added to the 2024 schedule.
One such event is LIV Golf Las Vegas, which will take place from Feb. 8-10 at the Las Vegas Country Club. It will be the first U.S.-based event of the season, and looks to take advantage of the many people set to descend on Las Vegas for an action-packed weekend.
Recently, Las Vegas has emerged as a global sporting centerpiece. Alongside its history with boxing, Las Vegas has seen a number of sports teams flock to the area, including the NFL’s Raiders and the WNBA’s Aces with MLB’s Oakland Athletics set to follow.
The Vegas Golden Knights are the reigning Stanley Cup champions, while the city hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix last weekend. The NBA In-Season tournament finals will also be hosted in Las Vegas, while speculation surrounding a potential permanent franchise continues to arise.
The decision from LIV Golf to move to Las Vegas further cements the city as a key city in the ever-crowded sporting landcape, and it will be interesting to see attendance figures once the event has gone ahead. Ultimately, Las Vegas is ultimately a city engineered by tourism while featuring an intense and crowded space to earn the discretionary dollars of visitors.
LIV Golf Commissioner and CEO Greg Norman is not concerned. In fact, the Australian is excited to have announced the revamped schedule as LIV Golf aims to build on its first full season.
