Sam Burns riled up the European crowd during Day Two of the Ryder Cup as he looked to spark an American comeback.

Burns, who had an awful showing in the Friday foursomes on his Ryder Cup debut, looked to redeem himself in the afternoon session Saturday as he and Collin Morikawa took on the undefeated pairing of Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland.

Burns and Morikawa, sent out first by Zach Johnson, rallied for Team USA going three up thru six against the European pairing that had thrashed their American teammates Scotties Scheffler and Brooks Koepka 9&7 in the morning.

A bright spark in what has been a bleak Ryder Cup for the USA in Rome, Burns finally offered some sign of life.

The American rookie rolled in a birdie putt from a few feet at the sixth green to win the hole and extend their lead to three over the Scandinavian duo.

After sinking a birdie putt to go three up, the American gestured to the raucous crowd

The noise from the raucous European crowd, who had been enjoying the dominance from their team, died down and Burns seized the chance to retaliate with some taunting of his own.

Showing shades of Patrick Reed, Burns cupped his ears and shouted to the Roman rabble, ‘What’s that? I can’t hear you. I can’t f***ing hear you.’

Burns and Morikawa headed the charge as Johnson’s team finally got a surge of red on the board Saturday afternoon.

They led the way as Max Homa and Brian Harman followed also with a lead over Nicolai Hojgaard and Tommy Fleetwood, and pals Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas led Justin Rose and Robert MacIntyre.

It was a welcomed respite for captain Johnson, who, following his team’s thrashing across the first three sessions, claimed that they had been hit by an illness spreading through the locker room.

‘We have got some congestion and some just signs of things that are unfortunate,’ he said Friday. ‘It has spread through my team. We’re just fighting things internally. It’s kind of passed around a little bit – caddies, players.’

However, the US captain was quick to reiterate Saturday that the mysterious ‘congestion’ was not an excuse.

‘It is just part of it [illness], this is sport, it is not an excuse,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘As I said over and over Luke [Donald] and his team did awesome and that is the story.’

The Americans were left facing a massacre after the Day Two’s morning session with a 9 1/2 -2 1/2 deficit heading into the fourballs.
