Ryan Moore on Broome in the Betfred Doncaster Cup and his other seven rides on the second day of St Leger meeting at Doncaster

  • Battle Cry has the chance to build upon his York maiden success on Friday
  • Broome in the hunt to stop Coltrane securing back-to-back Doncaster Cups

Ryan Moore has a full book of eight rides on the second day of Doncaster’s St Leger meeting, including big chances with Real Dream and Cherry.

He also partners Broome in a bid to stop Coltrane securing a second successive win in the Doncaster Cup.

13:15 Doncaster

Morning Light

The stable have been doing very well with their juveniles this season, and I rode a good winner for the same owner-trainer combination with Classical Song at Sandown recently. Morning Light is bred to be very smart, being by No Nay Never out of a 1,000 Guineas third, and is related to a number of winners, so hopefully she is another 2yo with plenty of talent for the yard.

Battle Cry

There is no stand-out going into the race, so hopefully Battle Cry can build upon his York maiden success and improve enough to take a hand in the finish here. He probably has as good a chance of any in an open Listed race.

Kylian

This is another 2yo race that is hard to call. Big Evs is maybe the one to beat back in his own age group after the Nunthorpe run, but you can make a case for a few in here. Inquisitively did it very well at York and Norfolk winner Valiant Force has a good form chance, but my mount Kylian has a decent shout if back to his best. He was very good at Sandown for me and didn’t get the run of the race when third behind Big Evs at Goodwood.

Broome

The ratings tell you there is very little between the penalised Coltrane, Trueshan and Broome in here, and it wouldn’t surprise you if Ebor runner-up Sweet William improved again and made his mark at this level at some point. Broome didn’t run up to his best behind Coltrane at York last time but his third in the Yorkshire Cup there in May gives him every chance here. He handles any ground but drying conditions would probably be in his favour over a trip which is probably at the top end of his range.

Real Dream

We obviously didn’t see the best of him from a wide draw in the Ebor and I see the handicapper has ignored the run, too. He was obviously a very progressive horse prior to that defeat, and he certainly has a fair chance to get back on track here. Maybe the easier ground will suit him better.

Cherry

All six have their chances in this fillies’ handicap and Cherry obviously broke her maiden tag in style at Goodwood last time. The step back up in trip looks fine and a mark of 88 appears fair.

16:45 Doncaster

Persuasion

He obviously comes here in good form and, although he has gone up 7lb for his recent win and narrow second, he has won off higher marks than his current rating in the past. And he has also run well here too, I see.

17:20 Doncaster

Red Zone Hero

He doesn’t look to have run his race at York last time but a reproduction of his earlier Yarmouth second and Ayr win would make him look a very fairly-handicapped horse off 79, I’d have thought.
