Fernando Alonso has promised “consequences” for those who speculated about his future after the paddock exploded with rumours about a sensational early departure from Aston Martin, and an even more extraordinary move to Red Bull.
Alonso has cut a frustrated figure in the paddock of late as Aston Martin ended what was a promising season in a disappointing fashion. The two-time world champion has suffered DNFs at both legs of the latest triple-header so far.
The result of these struggles has been catastrophic for both Alonso’s personal campaign in the Drivers’ Championship and Aston Martin’s Constructor Championship hopes. The 42-year-old has been relegated to fifth in the standings ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix and could feasibly still finish behind Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc.
Asked about the rumours surrounding his F1 future, Alonso hit back: “It is just rumours, normal paddock rumours, from people that are just trying to make fun of it and gain some followers, and these kinds of things. But I’m not into that game.

“I am not enjoying [it] because even in this room, I appreciate that all of you are journalists, professional people, that have been in F1 for so many years. You gain your respect, and this is how it should be.
“So, all the rumours are coming from people that are not in this room, are just here to make fun and I think it’s not funny when they play with anything. Of course, that’s the thing that they are making, but I will make sure that there are consequences.”
The F1 community was whipped into a frenzy after the Mexican Grand Prix when journalist Albert Fabrega took to the X social media platform to tease a vague rumour that he hinted would have a major impact on the sport.

While Fabrega didn’t explicitly mention Alonso in his tweets, his Spanish nationality, combined with the Aston Martin driver’s frustrations throughout the weekend allowed fans’ and journalists’ imaginations to run wild in speculation.
This speculation was only fuelled by another miserable weekend for Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull seat. The 33-year-old crashed out on the opening lap of his home race after an impressive launch gave him a shot at challenging for the lead heading into turn one.
With Perez failing to score a point at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, his lead over Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship has been cut to just 20 points heading into the remaining three races. This has placed Red Bull’s first-ever one-two finish, as well as his own future into question.
