Felipe Massa’s legal team are hoping for support from Lewis Hamilton in their appeal to overturn the outcome of the 2008 Formula One drivers’ title.

This comes following reports in April that Massa could start legal action against Hamilton after Bernie Ecclestone believed Singapore’s ‘Crashgate’ result should have been cancelled.

Since then, former F1 star Massa said that he would take legal action to ‘gain justice’ as his team believed that he missed out after losing that year’s championship by one point to Hamilton of McLaren.

Sao Paulo Vieira Rezende Advogados are representing Massa in his case and have urged Hamilton to assist their case.

Speaking to Reuters, Bernardo Viana of the law firm that represent Massa, said: ‘He (Hamilton) is an honorary Brazilian citizen and very well liked by Brazilians, so I hope he will support us.’

They continued to praise the Englishman, revealing that the case is not against Hamilton but is to defend sporting integrity.

‘He is an important ambassador for the sport and has always defended sporting integrity,’ Viana continued.

‘We have absolutely nothing against Hamilton.’

It remains to be seen as to whether Hamilton will support the case, with the scandal in Singapore dubbed as ‘Crashgate’.

Massa’s hopes for the title took a huge hit in Singapore, when it was revealed that Nelson Piquet had deliberately crashed Massa’s Renault into the wall in a bid to help team-mate Fernando Alonso’s championship ambitions.

Massa drop from first to 13th as Alonso won the race. It had pivotal implications as Massa eventually lost the championship by a point on the final day to Hamilton.

Ecclestone has since commented on the incident as he revealed that the race should have been cancelled.

‘We had enough information in time to investigate the matter,’ he said. ‘According to the statutes, we should have cancelled the race in Singapore under these conditions.’
