Crows outclass plucky Tigers in wet weather skirmish
Marnie Vinall
Many thought three-time premiers Adelaide had lost some of their competitive edge when Port Adelaide entered the competition last season and stripped them of some key players, including Erin Phillips and Ange Foley. But those pundits may start to be doubting themselves after the Crows comprehensively suffocated Richmond, who are not an easy beat, at Ikon Park on Friday night.
In wet weather conditions that turned to a freezing night that could rival the depths of a Melbourne winter, the Crows saluted their skipper Chelsea Randall in her 50th game and, with their second win of the season, sent a message to the competition. The Crows are still, to put it simply, very good.
Adelaide were victorious by 29 points, winning 6.5 (41) to 2.0 (12).

They kept Richmond goalless after the first quarter and finished the evening with 44 to 22 inside 50s, comfortably winning the territory battle, while controlling the ball movement with double the amount of uncontested possessions (140 to 73).
The Tigers are not a push over either. Last weekend, they added evidence that they’re a finals contender after claiming a six-point upset win over last season’s grand finalists Brisbane. This is after making their maiden finals in season seven, where they finished in fourth spot but bowed out in straight sets.
Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson said while he doesn’t like to look too far into the crystal ball, two tough opponents to start this season give them a good indication of where they are.
“We played really well last week against a really good opposition, and it was a pretty important win for us, and then we played another cracking opposition today, they’re really strong and they were just able to get us,” said Ferguson.
“So, it’s been a challenging couple of weeks. Exciting, we love a challenge, we lean into a challenge, and we were presented with one now. So, I think it’s pretty cool to be able to play two red-hot opposition in the first two rounds and then to come away from that 1-1, hopefully sets our season up to launch into the next little while.”
In classic Crows fashion, midfield duo Ebony Marinoff (15 tackles and 23 touches) and Anne Hatchard (18 touches) were prolific around the ground, while Danielle Ponter and Caitlin Gould (three goals) did damage up top. Many fans hoped to see a Randall goal but she couldn’t get clean hands to the ball close enough to goal.
Adelaide sharp shooter Ponter had a goal of the year contender when she got boot to ball out of the centre circle and it somehow sailed over the heads of her target (and opponents).
Thanks to a few lucky bounces it went through the big sticks. It was the most effective clearance in AFLW history.

Four-time Tigers best-and-fairest Monqiue Conti lead the disposal count with 29 touches and a goal, while Poppy Kelly kicked their side’s only other major.
Richmond suggested one of the competitive gaps in the competition was closing after coming in 2020 as an expansion side and now challenging some of the top sides. But Adelaide proved too strong and the Tigers still have work to do to be a consistent main player. But they are getting there.
