Alan Shearer red-faced after scoffing sweets live on air during Champions League

Alan Shearer munched on sweets live on air during Newcastle's Champions League defeat – but it wasn't his fault.

The Toon icon thought he was off air on BBC Radio 5 Live but was caught short after his Haribo eating was heard over the airwaves by presenter Mark Chapman.

From back in the studio, Chapman asked: "Who's opening the sweets at Newcastle? Who's opening the sweets? I can hear you." Commentator Ian Dennis then said: "Alan! Well I can talk… can you Alan?" Before the Premier League icon had his own say.

He mumbled: "Someone told me my mic was live but we're not going to be on for two minutes!"

Dennis then revealed: "Can I say something, it was me but Alan had put some in his mouth and I'd finished mine! So I've just thrown him under the bus. I felt guilty."

The laugh was a moment of respite for Shearer on a night of frustration as Newcastle were beaten by the better side in Dortmund at St James' Park, after ugly scenes outside the ground as fans fought before the match.

The only goal of the game came through former Manchester City prospect Felix Nmecha just before the break, with Eddie Howe's side coming closest through Matt Targett's effort off the crossbar.

Ahead of their trip to Dortmund in two weeks, Newcastle sit level with the Bundesliga outfit on four points – two behind PSG and two ahead of AC Milan.

Before the game comes Premier League contests against Wolves and Arsenal either side of Manchester United in the EFL Cup.

Shearer said after the game: "You can't say it was a fluke, Dortmund might have been lucky once or twice in the last 10 minutes when it hit the bar but they defended so well.

"They have played Newcastle really well and played the crowd really well. They were such a threat on the break.

"If Newcastle are honest then I think they'll accept they didn't deserve anything from the game."
