Lionesses star Alex Greenwood needed oxygen after being involved in a sickening clash of heads against Belgium.

Greenwood collided with home player Jassina Blom while ducking to head the ball midway through the first half of the Nations League clash. While Blom was able to continue with a bandage on her head, Greenwood needed to be attended to by medics on the field.

Greenwood was put into a neck brace and appeared to be given oxygen at one stage with paramedics plus members of England’s medical in attendance. With players from both sides looking on concerned, the Manchester City defender was eventually placed onto a stretcher and carried off the pitch.

After a delay of 13-and-a-half minutes, the match eventually resumed. Commentator Jacqui Oatley posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Really hoping Alex Greenwood is OK. Horrible looking head injury during Belgium v England. Medical staff took their time to ensure precautions were taken before Greenwood was taken off on a stretcher."

The scenes naturally left watching fans worried. One said: “God Alex Greenwood staying down for so long is concerning.” Another added: "Looked nasty, terrible head clash."

A third commented: Alex Greenwood is one of the best female footballers in the world with a sweet left foot. Our hopes and prayers are only with Alex."

Other fans were left amazed that Blom was able to continue, with one saying: "I know the paramedics know far more but it does seem if they cracked heads that hard that it knocked Greenwood down this severely, then the other player should have more checks. Hope she’s looked over again in half-time."

In a positive update, it was later reported by ITV that Greenwood was conscious and talking. Greenwood, who was replaced by Jess Carter, has earned 85 caps for England since making her debut in 2014 and played a key role in the team’s run to the final of this summer’s World Cup.
