Andy Cole made a hilarious gaffe while conducting the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw on Wednesday night.

The former Manchester United striker was a pundit for Sky Sports’ coverage of his former club’s 3-0 defeat to Newcastle at Old Trafford in the fourth round alongside Izzy Christiansen and Shay Given.

Following the game, Christiansen and Cole undertook the draw for the last eight with presenter Mark Chapman.

However, as Cole pulled out one ball, he inspected with a bewildered look, before he held the ball to the camera and queried with Chapman over whether it was a number six or a number nine.

He could be heard saying: ‘Is it this way?’, before Chapman hilariously replied: ‘It is that way.

‘Mainly because hopefully there are only eight balls Andy. If there’s a nine in there we’re in big trouble.’

Given there are only eight teams left in the competition, it explains why there would be no number nine to draw out and the trio all shared a laugh after Chapman pointed this out.

The aforementioned number six Cole picked was Fulham’s number, with Marco Silva’s side being faced with a trip to Goodison Park to take on Everton.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s challenging run in the Carabao Cup will continue after Eddie Howe’s side were drawn away to Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool will host West Ham at Anfield, after earning a 2-1 win over Bournemouth in the fourth round.

West Ham were impressive 3-1 winners over Arsenal on Wednesday night.

The draw also ensured one non-Premier League side will feature in the semi-finals of the competition with League One side Port Vale faced with a home game against Middlesbrough.

Port Vale are featuring the last eight of the competition for the first time in their history.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough are in the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
