Ange Postecoglou has revealed he supported one of Tottenham’s Premier League rivals as a kid.

The 58-year-old took over the north London side this summer and has guided them to a fine start to the season.

The Greek-born Australian Postecoglou has admitted he always wanted to become a manager from a young age and has been inspired by one of country’s biggest clubs.

‘I was a massive Liverpool fan. I loved Bill Shankly, I loved the boot room, the whole story,’ the Spurs boss told Gary Lineker on BBC’s Football Focus.

‘Are you still a Liverpool fan?’ Lineker questioned, to which Postecoglou jokingly replied: ‘Well, I’ve taken the posters down mate, last week!’

Postecoglou added: ‘Liverpool in the ’70s, when they played the whole possession stuff and really played football, it was a bit different, and it always attracted me down that road.

‘That obviously influenced me.’

Postecoglou took an unconventional route to becoming a Premier League manager. Prior to his move to Tottenham, he had spells with the likes of Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory, the Australian national side and Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan.

He led Celtic to back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles before earning a move to the capital with Tottenham.

An impressive start to the season has seen his side pick up 13 points from a possible 15 ahead of their north London derby showdown with Arsenal on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at the Emirates, he said: ‘In terms of the way we play, we’re not changing, mate. We’ll go out and scare the life out of them.’

‘If we shy away from it, don’t play our football, manage to get a draw and survive the experience, what have we really learned? Apart from surviving 90 minutes of football? Nothing. We’re going to go out and play our football.’
