Ange Postecoglou throws gauntlet down to Tottenham star playing for his future

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has told Giovani Lo Celso to take his chance in the coming weeks. The Argentine is likely to feature more regularly and will be given every opportunity to turn his Spurs career around.

Lo Celso’s only start of the season came in the Carabao Cup defeat to Fulham in August. He was taken off at half-time and hasn’t started a game since, coming off the bench on three occasions in the Premier League.

He has remained a regular in the Argentina squad and started the 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Brazil in midweek. But it has been a different story at the club level.

The 27-year-old spent 18 months on loan at Villarreal, making 51 appearances in all competitions before returning to Spurs in the summer. He was linked with a move away from north London but stayed put and still has over 18 months remaining on his contract.

Tottenham are without James Maddison until the new year due to an ankle injury, while Yves Bissouma is suspended for Sunday’s match against Aston Villa. Postecoglou therefore says Lo Celso will get his chance and says he has wiped his slate clean from his previous experience at Tottenham.

Postecoglou said: “Gio will get an opportunity, particularly over the next few weeks because we are down on numbers and have a fair few games between now and the new year. You can see he has certain qualities.

“He’s had a disruptive season for us. He’s had a few injuries, he hasn’t really had a clean run at it. But you can see technically he’s a very creative player.

“He works hard for the team. He’ll get an opportunity over the next few weeks to hopefully come in and make an impact.

“If they’re here they’ll get an opportunity, that’s all you can offer. Previous exposure here at the club, that’s not really relevant to me – it’s what I see from now on.”

Lo Celso initially joined Tottenham on loan from Real Betis in 2019 before making the deal permanent the following January. He played 38 times in total in his first campaign in English football but has been on a steady decline in opportunities since.

Former Spurs right-back Alan Hutton said earlier this month that it was time his old club looked at replacing the midfielder. He told football.london: “It’s going to be very difficult to fill the void Maddison leaves. I think the likes of Lo Celso, can he do it? I’m not sure.

“I think he’s had enough opportunities. He’s needed at this moment in time, but I don’t think he’ll ever be your go-to guy.”
