Mikel Arteta reviews Arsenal's resounding win over Lens
Arsenal are reportedly focusing their attention on tying Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu down onto fresh contracts as soon as possible. All of the noise coming out of the Emirates Stadium suggests the Gunners are confident that both deals will be completed swiftly.
Tomiyasu has eighteen months remaining on his deal. There had been rampant speculation at the start of the season that he would be on the move in the not-so-distant future after Jurrien Timber’s arrival over the summer.
However, Timber has since undergone surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee which is set to keep him out of action for the majority of the 2023/2024 campaign. In his absence, Tomiyasu has been provided with more game time and has taken the opportunity with both hands.
Mikel Arteta is said to be extremely impressed with the 25-year-old’s progress and is hoping to extend his deal before it runs out in 2025. Bayern Munich are interested in acquiring his services but it is understood that Tomiyasu would much rather re-sign with the Gunners.
White’s contract has two and a half years remaining on it. However, that hasn’t stopped the north Londoners from entering into talks with the Englishman over a new deal. According to the Daily Mirror, negotiations have progressed well between White, his representatives and the club in the past few weeks.
Arteta and sporting director Edu are keen to reward the 26-year-old for his impressive form. Making early progress on new contracts for their biggest stars has become a consistent part of Arsenal’s transfer policy in recent years.

The Gunners have seen multiple big names leave the Emirates for free over the years and there has been a considerable push to end this unwanted trend since Edu became Arsenal’s sporting director in 2022. Arsenal recently renewed William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, and Aaron Ramsdale’s contract well in advance of their expiration dates.
Given White’s progression into one of the best right-backs in the country, it is no surprise that Arsenal are keen to keep him around. The versatile defender joined Arsenal for £50m from Brighton in 2021 and has played at both centre half and right back for the club.
