Atletico Madrid suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to LaLiga newcomers Las Palmas at Gran Canaria Stadium on Friday night.
Diego Simeone’s side came into the tie riding a six-game winning streak in the league and could have leapfrogged cross-town rivals Real, who had played a game more.
But the away side were undone by Garcia Pimienta’s confident outfit who, if not for Girona would have been lauded as the surprise package of the young season in their first top-flight campaign in six years.
After a goalless first period the deadlock was finally broken 51 minutes into the game when Los Amarillos skipper Kirian Rodríguez arrowed a long drive past Jan Oblak.
The 20-year-old starlet Alberto Moleiro registered his first assist but it was the clever dummy from Manchester City loanee Maximo Perrone, 20, that created the space for the shot.

Diego Simeone’s side suffered their second league defeat of the season on Friday night
The home side doubled their advantage in the 75th minute after midfielder Javier Munoz intercepted a sloppy pass into the middle from Mario Hermoso and launched a counter.
Former Barcelona and Sevilla forward Munir laid off a pass out wide for team-mate Benito Ramirez del Toro to run onto and score.
Atletico managed to make the final minutes nervy for Las Palmas thanks to Alvaro Morata’s strike in the 83rd minute. But it proved only to be a consolation for the 2021 LaLiga champions.
The result sees them remain in third after 11 games, three points behind early pace-setters Real Madrid and Girona.
