Harry Maguire revealed how David Beckham rang him up to offer support after he was jeered by Scotland fans last month.
The Manchester United and England defender was loudly booed when he was brought on by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate in the friendly win over the Tartan Army. Maguire, 30, then scored an own goal which led to more mocking but former United star Beckham was on the blower just a few days later.
The ex-England skipper suffered vile abuse after he was sent off during the World Cup in 1998 against Argentina for kicking out at Diego Simeone which is revisited in a new Netflix documentary. And he shared his experiences with Maguire, who said: "I don’t want to go too much into the conversation but the main thing he did is he reminded me of the career I’ve had to date and the big moments I’ve had in my career.

"I think when you’re going through tough moments you’ve got to go through past experiences and past memories and where you’ve gone in your career and what you’ve been through. Every career is so up and down, especially when you reach what I’ve reached, in terms of being the captain of the biggest club in the world for three and a half years. He’s been in that position and knows what it’s like.
"Obviously having watched the documentary I couldn’t believe how much he went through at the time. In the documentary Gary Neville speaks about how resilient he is as a person. I think he’s been a huge role model for many footballers growing up, especially in my era."

Maguire has endured a torrid time at Old Trafford in the last 12 months having lost his place in Erik ten Hag’s side last season and then the captaincy this summer.
Some of his performances when he has had chances have been underwhelming but he did impress against Brentford last Saturday as he assisted Scott McTominay for the stoppage-time winner.

Maguire refused to go into detail about the conversations with Beckham but admits watching his new Netflix documentary gives an insight into the advice given.
He said: "Listen if you watch the documentary David explains a lot of how he dealt with it and I’m not going to go into a personal conversation. It meant everything."
