Burnley and Bournemouth fans fume at VAR with ruthless chant after latest farce

VAR is the hot topic of discussion once again this weekend after it took the video assistant five minutes to decide whether or not to rule Jay Rodriguez’s last-gasp equaliser at the Vitality Stadium offside. In the end, they chose to stick with the on-field decision to chalk it off but the amount of time it took for them to come to that conclusion left Burnley and Bournemouth fans restless.

Chants of “this is embarrassing” rang around the ground as VAR frantically combed through the footage. But the assistants could be forgiven for their thoroughness given the recent controversy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium that saw Luis Diaz’s goal wrongfully disallowed due to a lapse in concentration from Darren England.

In the end, the right decision was made and Bournemouth managed to hang on to seal a crucial victory that pulls them out of the drop zone. Phillip Billing came to the rescue with a stunning strike in the 76th minuteafter Antoine Semenyo drew the Cherries level following an early goal from Charlie Taylor.

The Denmark international showed great awareness as he caught out James Trafford on the edge of his box to secure Bournemouth their first victory this season.

It relieves a great deal of pressure on under-fire manager Andoni Iraola, who will be absolutely delighted with his team’s performance. Prior to the match, the Spaniard spoke about the importance of a victory this weekend.

“I think there is pressure. We are facing a team that is in a similar situation as ours. Also some similarities, because they are also a young team. They are conceding goals in moments where they deserve more or they are playing well. They are struggling a little bit there.

“We want to beat them and we want to pass them in the standings and it’s a very, very important game for us, yes.” When asked about how he feels the players are handling the heat, Iraola replied: “They were able to turn the situation, get the points and get the wins.

“Now is not the moment to talk too much. The only thing that will solve this is to go and win games. I will try to answer everything you want to tell me, but I know that the only answer especially Bournemouth supporters want is to win the game tomorrow.”
