Stamford Bridge celebrated a goal for the first time since August 30 on Wednesday as Nicolas Jackson scored against Brighton in the EFL Cup after 50 minutes. It was enough to earn them a 1-0 win and send them through to the fourth round of the competition, and it came after they were paid a visit from one of the owners.
After Chelsea lost 1-0 to Aston Villa at home on Sunday, part-owner Behdad Eghbali paid a visit to the team dressing room.
It’s become a common occurrence at the club, and he visited the dressing room again after they bounced back with the win over Brighton. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has given his blessing to the visits after admitting it’s something he’s been used to wherever he has coached, but did say that he doesn’t want the owners to “come for some speech” after majority owner Todd Boehly once told the Chelsea players they were “embarrassing.”
But whatever Eghbali did appears to have inspired something, as Chelsea secured the win against a dominant Brighton team who currently sit third in the Premier League table. It’s been a woeful calendar year for Chelsea, but the owners will be hoping Wednesday’s result is the start of something new after their latest visit.

Over £1 billion has been spent on player transfers by the new Chelsea owners in just three transfer windows. But the money is yet to be justified as they currently aren’t playing European football, and they’ve won just one Premier League game all season.
Chelsea supporters are starting to turn on the new owners, and even after Eghbali visited the dressing room he was later seen running from angry fans outside the stadium. In the league, Chelsea have picked up just five points in six games, and sit 14th in the table.
In 2023 alone they share the joint-worst record with Everton for points picked up across all active Premier League teams, offering an insight into how far they have fallen. But Pochettino is happy with the owners dropping by to help the team, although under some conditions.

“I think it’s good that the owners came to the dressing room. It’s in the way that they approach the players that is the most important,” said Pochettino. “If they are in a good way, I think they’re very welcome. After my press conference on Sunday against Aston Villa they came and shared with us like normal.
“Against Liverpool, first game, then Luton and Nottingham Forest, they came with Paul and Laurence and Behdad, and sometimes with Todd also. They share some comments and we talk about the game, always after my [press] duties.
“I don’t see it in a bad way. For me it’s good always if they share with us, then they can say hello to the players. The difference is if they come for some speech. That is different. But in the way they came, they are very welcome.
“They own the club, they can do whatever they want. I think they are in a very good way and we are glad that they came and shared with us – even like what happened on Sunday when we didn’t win and we are suffering.”
