Chelsea warned Enzo Fernandez might quit already as Merson rings alarm bells

Chelsea have been warned that Enzo Fernandez won’t stay at the club for long unless they find a formula for success soon. Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has given a damning verdict on the Blues after just one win in their first four Premier League matches of the season.

Chelsea underwent a huge overhaul in the summer transfer window. A long list of established stars left the club as Todd Boehly once again splashed out on a number of big-money signings.

Mauricio Pochettino has been tasked with leading the Stamford Bridge revolution. However, despite some positive signs in the opening weeks of the campaign, results are yet to materialise.

Chelsea lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday and sit 12th in the table with four points from four league games. Fernandez, who joined for £106.8million in January, has fitted in seamlessly to Pochettino’s midfield.

Merson believes Pochettino will get things right eventually with the rest of the team. However, the Chelsea fan can see a scenario where Fernandez looks to jump ship if that doesn’t happen soon.

Merson told Sky Sports: “Chelsea have brought in a million players and you think: ‘How do you get a team out of this lot?’ Chelsea is about winning trophies. It’s not Tottenham, trying to get in the top four, but that’s where it’s got to – so quickly, as well.

“Mauricio Pochettino will get it right because he’s a good manager, but it’s going to be hard. If they get in the top four then they will be pulling up trees.

“They’ve bought too many players that are the same. Enzo Fernandez is different class – a cut above the rest. But how long will he stand for this?”

Merson believes the main problem at Chelsea is that they are unable to break down teams who are determined to sit back and hit them on the counter-attack. He added: “There’s not enough guile in the team. You haven’t got players that will put the ball through the eye of a needle.

“Teams will go to Stamford Bridge, set up 10 players behind the ball and counter-attack. I said on Saturday that Chelsea would get beaten 1-0. I know how they struggle against teams that play 10 at the back.

“They can’t break teams down. It’s like watching Subbuteo football – there’s no movement. Unless Fernandez finds that killer pass, no one else will.”
